Description
The sound-barrier shock wave, rendered in blue. SuperSonic is Danish designer Carina Caia's 2023 mobile for Flensted: a set of concentric rings, each suspended inside the next on fine stainless-steel rods, each turning at its own speed. Watch it for a minute and the rings appear to pass through one another, an optical illusion that comes from ordinary air currents doing the work, no motor involved.
Blue is the calmer of the two colorways. It sits easily in a bedroom, a nursery, or a reading corner, where the slow rotation has the same effect a fish tank does: something to rest your eyes on. About 10 inches across, so it doesn't need a big room. Ten minutes of assembly (the rings slide onto the rods) and it arrives flat-packed, which makes it a tidy gift to send.
Handmade in Denmark, like every Flensted mobile since 1953.
