Description
Carina Caia's SuperSonic is one of Flensted's newest designs (2023) and one of its most hypnotic. Concentric cardboard rings are fitted to slim steel rods so that each ring hangs inside the next; as they rotate at slightly different speeds you get the optical illusion of rings passing through one another, the visual equivalent of a shock wave leaving an aircraft that has just broken the sound barrier, which is where the name comes from.
In red it is a graphic, high-contrast piece that holds a wall on its own, roughly 10 inches across. It works above a dining table or a desk, and it's a favorite in kids' rooms because the motion is slow and mesmerizing rather than busy. Assembly is about ten minutes: slide the rings onto the rods and hang. It arrives flat, which also makes it an easy piece to ship as a gift.
Handmade in Denmark by Flensted, the family mobile workshop founded in 1953.
